PRIDE 2023

From woven worlds to fluid lines and the power of the community: Three artists & the month of love

As Marimekko founder Armi Ratia wrote in her diary at the age of 14, "There is only one strength—love." This thought is now interpreted through art by Anna-Karoliina Vainio, Shanée Benjamin, and Juli Baker and Summer.

In 2023, Marimekko celebrates Pride with store window artworks inspired by Armi Ratia’s brilliant quote that highlights the power of love. Throughout the Pride month June, selected Marimekko store windows in Helsinki, New York, and Bangkok will display original artworks by three local LGBTQIA+ community artists.

Meet the creators

Anna-Karoliina Vainio

Anna-Karoliina is a Helsinki-based visual and textile artist who works with soft materials to create glimpses into colorful and escapist realities. Her woven, knotted, and sewn worlds navigate between the past and the future. The soft, tactile surface and bold colors of the wall hangings, inspired by craft history, symbolism, and folklore, captivate and invite you to dive into fantasy.

Anna-Karoliina’s artwork for Pride Month 2023 will be exhibited at Marimekko Aleksinkulma, Aleksanterinkatu 50, Helsinki.

Shanée Benjamin

Shanée Benjamin is an art director and illustrator from Brooklyn, focusing on Gen Z and millennial content. With almost a decade of design experience, Shanée made the leap into digital illustration, focusing on telling the stories of LGBTQIA+ people of color. Creating community and connection through art is her passion.

Shanée’s artwork for Pride Month 2023 will be exhibited at Marimekko New York, 97 Wooster Street, NYC.

Juli Baker and Summer

Juli Baker and Summer is a Bangkok-based artist of vibrant and youthful energy. Her use of bright colors and fluid lines creates a sense of vibration, as if one could hear exuberant music notes accompanying the movement of the characters or subjects. Juli started her artist career under the nom de plume Juli Baker and Summer in 2015. Her works often take inspiration from people, music, literature, films, everyday-life conversations, and traveling.

Juli’s artwork for Pride Month 2023 will be exhibited at Marimekko Central World centralwOrld store at Atrium Zone 4,4/1-4/2,4/4 999/9 Rama I Rd, Pathum Wan, Bangkok.
