Behind the Patterns

Extend the Concepts on Sustainable Development

【Sustainable Fashion】Marimekko has always been concerned with sustainability and has sought to become more environmentally friendly through three goals: timeless design, products that leave no trace, and positive change through fairness, with the goal of taking sustainable development to the next level. Last year, Marimekko has committed to Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which in line with the UN Paris Climate Agreement. The Paris Climate Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius relative to pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In addition to produce timeless and durable designs which last from one generation to the next, sustainable materials are also used in product development, with the aim of combining fashion with environmental protection. After the launch of sustainable lifestyle concept Marimade last year, Marimekko extends sustainable design to the entire brand this season.

100% Organic Cotton

This season, most of our products are made of 100% organic cotton, which is not exposed to any pollution from planting to production of the garment and therefore retains its natural color. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has been banned for more than three years, which reduces the damage to our skin. Among the seasonal collection, Kioski collection including sweaters, T-shirts, dresses, and shirts, all of which are all made of 100% organic cotton.

In order to be more environmentally friendly to our earth, our new canvas bags are made of organic and unbleached cotton straight from own printing mill in Helsinki.

Botanical DYE

Marimekko continues to experiment on natural dyes this season, we aim to minimize harmful impacts on the environment and the use of heavy chemicals. Botanical DYE is the focus this season, while Finnish Indigo was introduced earlier in 2021, we added Willow dye in Spring 2023. By using Botanical DYE, the dyeing process will not generate harmful sewage, which has reached a new milestone for sustainable development in Marimekko.

This means, for example, using more organic and recycled materials. In between 2019 and 2021, we reduced our own carbon footprint by 21%, including switching to renewable energy and increasing the use of more sustainable materials (organic and recycled materials), which continuously reduce the environmental impact of our activities.
